Marco brings enviable knowledge and skills to his work at Jackson-Triggs having worked on numerous vintages over the past 10 years. He’s worked in Italy, Germany and Argentina, gaining valuable experience in both the Northern and Southern hemispheres. "Wine is alive, and expresses its unique vigour from the vine right through to our palate," he says, "and I enjoy infusing each grape with part of my own personality."
Marco grew up in Northeastern Italy in one of the world's most established wine regions. After specializing in agriculture in high school he worked at local wineries starting as a cellar hand and progressing to cellar management and assistant winemaker. Following that he earned a joint Masters Degree in Grape Growing and Winemaking from the University of Udine in Italy and the University of Applied Science in Wiesbaden-Geisenheim, Germany. Working in Germany's Rheingau wine region was a life changing experience for Marco and it was here that he gained hands-on experience in cool climate viticulture.
Keen to learn more about new world winemaking and the unique terroir of the Niagara Peninsula, Marco accepted an internship at the Inniskillin Niagara Estate Winery and was rewarded the position of Assistant Winemaker at Vincor International (now Arterra Wines Canada Inc.) in Niagara Falls. In September 2005 he became a winemaker at Jackson-Triggs Niagara Estate Winery where he now works closely with Casey Kulczyk, Jackson-Triggs’ Assistant Winemaker, to bring Jackson-Triggs recognized style to each wine that he makes.
Dave has worked in the vineyard since he was 11 years old. He was doing basic field analysis at age of 15 - too young to drive but knowledgeable enough to measure acidity. While still a teen, he worked on the Becker Project, a major research project that greatly influenced development of the B.C. wine industry. His first winemaking role was at Sumac Ridge Estate Winery where he was the Assistant Winemaker for 8 years after working many years in the cellars/vineyards and other aspects of the business. During Dave’s years with Sumac Ridge he was a part of producing many award winning wines. One that he is very proud of is the multiple-award winning 1997 Pinot Blanc Sumac Ridge Estate Winery Icewine.
He then took over the reigns as Senior Winemaker at See Ya Later Ranch, responsible for managing the cellar and creating a “best of show” portfolio inspired by the local lifestyle andlocation. After a short period of time at See Ya Later, Dave and his team were awarded the Lieutenant Governor’s Award of Excellence for their Brut Sparkling wine. Dave was extremely proud of this award as his experience working with traditional bottle fermented sparkling wine went back decades to the original development of the Steller’s Jay brand for Sumac Ridge. After many years of practical winemaking experience, Dave went back to school and completed his formal winemaking training through U.C. Davis in California.
In 2007 he became Senior Winemaker for the Constellation Oliver winery, leading the winemaking teams for Jackson-Triggs Okanagan along with See Ya Later Ranch, and a few years later, the teams of Sumac Ridge and Inniskillin west became part of Dave’s team. Dave was formally promoted in 2015 to Regional Senior Winemaker for the Constellation Brands / Okanagan Estates.
In addition to overseeing the team, he is back as head winemaker at Jackson-Triggs Okanagan. Dave is extremely proud and honoured to have worked with so many talented individuals over the years. He is humbled to be part of such a passionate team and brand that has played such a major role in the development of the Okanagan wine industry. The brand has a diverse portfolio that has captured the essence and diversity of the Okanagan terroir, from big bold fruit forward reds to crisp, grassy Sauvignon Blancs.
Dave’s passionate commitment to every detail of the winemaking process has earned many awards and accolades. His greatest pleasure is in pouring for appreciative winery visitors. “I’m proud to be part of a team so totally committed to producing wines of the highest quality.”
Our founders, Allan Jackson and Don Triggs, established the winery in 1993. With their partnership began an unwavering dedication to quality, value and tradition, which we continue to honour today.
